What Is a Folio Number?
What it is
A folio number is the reference a company’s registrar uses to find one shareholder’s holding. You’ll find it on share certificates, dividend warrants and letters from the registrar. It isn’t a demat account number, and it isn’t the same as a mutual fund folio. It’s worth knowing the difference, because searching with the wrong one wastes time.
When you need it
You’re contacting a registrar about paper shares: it’s the fastest way for them to find your record.
You’re claiming unpaid dividends and need to show which holding they belong to.
You have several folios with one company and want them joined into one.
When you don’t
The shares are in demat, where your DP ID and client ID are used instead.
You don’t have it: a claim can still start from the company name and the shareholder’s name.
